Meet Coral Slavin,

Owner & Director of Well-Rounded Maternity Center

Coral is the owner and director of the Well-Rounded Maternity Center. She is on the board and former chair for the Childbirth Assistance, Recources and Education (C.A.R.E. Network) of Wisconsin – a membership and referral organization of birth professionals dedicated to helping women and their families have safe and satisfying births.

Coral is married to husband Jim. She has three children. Robert, the oldest was born in a hospital. Ruth was born in a free-standing birth center and Michael was born at home. As a birth professional and a mother, she knows the pros and cons of birth in all three settings.

Coral has a doctorate in health education, and has, at one time, been certified as a Bradley Childbirth Educator; both an ICEA and DONA Doula, an ACE Prenatal Fitness/Yoga Instructor, and a Stress Management Counselor and hypnotherapist. She has been a doula and childbirth educator for over 19 years and has attended nearly 500 births locally, in all types of settings.*

As a doula, Coral is dedicated to helping parents-to-be make the choices that are right for them. She understands well the pros and cons of the decisions parents face regarding birth place, care-providers, and interventions.

“I believe that childbirth is a normal, instinctive process that integrates body, mind, and spirit. It is not an illness requiring treatment or routine intervention. Women planning on birthing in a hospital most often say that they fear losing control of their birth experience. Yet, to labor most effectively, it is this very control that they must surrender, allowing the natural process to flow. They are able to let go when they have faith in their own bodies, and in their caregivers. Women are capable of giving birth naturally if they have the commitment, knowledge, and support to do so.”

* Coral no longer remains certified or affiliated with Bradley or DONA.

A Note From Sasha Bariffe,

Director of Well-Rounded Maternity Center

When I was 17 years old I decided I wanted to be a caregiver, and specifically, a labor and delivery nurse. In high school, I was able to become a certified nursing assistant through an elective course and I started on my path. After graduating high school, I continued my studies at MATC, completing the Practical Nurses curriculum and working as a CNA, working in nursing homes, hospice, home care, and hospitals.

My interest for birth was piqued when I witnessed a birth in the emergency room. It was so exciting to realize that the birth was happening on its own terms (though the other nurses would have loved to get that patient up to labor and delivery first!). The calling toward birthwork was further solidified when I stood at the side of my sister through her labor and birth. After my own uncomplicated pregnancy and birth, I pursued education with ICEA to become a birth doula. Finally, I realized where I really need to be, and became a student midwife. I went on to become a Certified Perinatal Educator and Certified Breastfeeding Educator at Midwest Maternal Child Institute.

I am partner to the wonderful Shawn, who has been so awesomely supportive of my birth work. I am proudly the mother of two bright-eyed, dimple-cheeked, goofy children, and stepmom to two lovely young adults.

I believe that all people should have access to care through their childbearing years no matter their socioeconomic status, gender, race, or physical abilities. I recognize that all people deserve kindness, respect and dignity. I strive to be inclusive and welcoming with the care that I offer, be it to people of color, immigrant peoples, people of all sizes, and the LGBTQ community. I offer a payment plan to fit your schedule, along with a flexible fee structure, and bartering options.
